The 3rd Oil Spill Awareness Training class to be held on February 4, 2011 was cancelled due to weather. The class has been rescheduled to Friday, April 8th, 5-9 pm. The initial class held on August 24th, 2010. A subsequent class was held on November 30, 2010. A total of 45 volunteers have completed the training to date and have been awarded certificates of completion, and are now qualified to respond to oil spills corresponding to this level of certification. Perhaps just as important, this class taught the students that the need for an organizational coordination of efforts is essential to efficient response to oil spills.
The Coastal Bend Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation takes protecting our beaches seriously. Who can better serve as the "eyes and ears" on our part of the coast than surfers, fishermen and regular beachgoers who are on often on the Gulf beaches at dawn and there until after dark?
Our chapter conducts various fundraising efforts throughout the year to provide funding to pay for these training classes.

If you found the 200 million gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico concerning, consider also the 1.8 million gallons of dispersants used by BP in an attempt to clean up their mess. Though the amount seems miniscule in comparison, the real danger of dispersant lies in the ambiguity surrounding them. Will they make their way into the food chain, thereby infecting commercial seafood? Kill animals? Inhibit their growth and reproduction? No one seems to know. In fact, there are even questions as to whether dispersants help or hinder the breakdown of oil.
