John Bircham
Unique, one-of-a-kind hand-carved "Naples" Alaia
Estimated Value - $900.00
Starting Bid - $450.00
Long-time Goleta surfer, resident and wooden surfboard "Alaia" shaper, John Birchim, will be crafting a unique surfboard to support Surfrider Foundation's efforts to preserve the Gaviota coastline. John was a featured shaper at the Sacred Craft Expo in Ventura last May. He shapes and rides various wooden boards, including the alaia. Alaias are small, thin, finless wooden planks, believed to be first made and used by the ancient Polynesians. Alaia have re-emerged on the modern surfing scene with the likes of Dave Rastovich, Tom Carroll, the Malloys, and Rob Machado all riding and enjoying them. John will be at the Holiday Fundraiser and will say a few words about the board.
"It is my pleasure to do anything I can do to protect Naples. Growing
up in Tecolote Canyon I surfed the stretch between Haskells and Naples
more than anything else and dream of my kids having the same
opportunity (and their kids kids too)." - John Bircham
