No on I-1033 for November 3, 2009 Election
WE WON!!!
Thank you for voting!
This initiative was defeated: NO: 55%, YES: 44%
Goal: Stop Initiative 1033 from passing this November.
If passed, Tim Eyman's Ballot Initiative 1033 will have devastating effects on Washington's ocean and coastal protection and clean up efforts.
I-1033 is a serious threat to the health of our oceans and beaches. If passed, this bill compromises state, county, and local programs that we care about, including oil spill prevention, shorelines protection and restoration, marine debris removal, shoreline access and Puget Sound recovery.
Objectives:
Spread the word about how I-1033 is bad for our oceans and beaches. Get out the vote: elections are November 3rd, absentee ballots are mailed mid October.
Talking points:
Vote "NO" on Initiative 1033 this November and make sure your friends know to vote "NO" on behalf of oceans, waves and beaches.
If I-1033 passes, this measure ensures that the state never recovers from the budget crisis of 2009 -- the worst in Washington history. This year Washington faced a budget deficit that forced state legislators to make very tough cuts to essential coastal programs. I-1033 would lock in this year's budget as our baseline.
Under I-1033, as the economy recovers, the state budget would not. Instead, the worst of times would become the best that we can hope for. Puget Sound restoration, beach access and clean up programs, and natural resource agencies will all be in jeopardy if this misleading initiative passes.
A similar initiative passed in Colorado in 1992 and the effects have been terrible - so bad in fact, that Colorado has become one of the nation's poorest funded and poorest performing states. A coalition of civic groups, business leaders, and Republican Governor Bill Owens joined together in 2005 to help pass a referendum to suspend the initiative for five years.
Over 30 other states have rejected similar proposals.
