Welcome to the Seattle Chapter's Programs Page

Surfrider programs are a way for volunteers to get involved with an issue they are passionate about. In Seattle, we are currently running two programs. Check out the summaries of each program below. If you find one that intrigues you, go to the program's main page to get more information and let us know you want to help.

****Current Programs****

BLUE WATER TASK FORCE -

The Blue Water Task Force (BWTF) is the Surfrider Foundation's water quality monitoring, education and advocacy program. After a hiatus in testing, the Seattle Chapter is testing water again. We have chosen several locations to test.

We are currently looking for volunteer sample collectors and lab techs to ensure that the BWTF program is successful for a long time to come. Even if you have only a short window of time to contribute to the program, any amount of time you can give is the right amount.

For more information, go to our Blue Water Task Force Program page.

If you would like to volunteer please email us at seattle@surfrider.org.

SNOWRIDER PROJECT -

The Snowrider Project, sponsored by the Surfrider Foundation, is dedicated to empower, enlighten and educate "Snowriding" enthusiasts everywhere. Informing people about the intimate and powerful connections between the snow, land, and surf; Snowrider helps to demonstrate how each of these ecosystems must be preserved, protected and restored in order to help insure the future health of our environment. It is also one of the Seattle Chapter's strongest programs, thanks to its long time coordinator, Mike McCann.

For more information, go to our Snowrider Project page.

If you would like to volunteer at one of our many Snowrider events this winter please email Mike at snowrider@surfrider.org.

****Programs We'd Like to Start****

OCEAN FRIENDLY GARDENS -

Runoff from residential landscapes affects the quality of our oceans and the quality of our lives. The sediment in water reduces clarity; nutrients increase algae populations and thus red tide events; bacteria close beaches; debris can choke and suffocate aquatic species; and pesticides picked up off a landscape can poison fish consumed by humans - all of which degrade the natural beauty, and our enjoyment, of the ocean.

The good news is that you can help bring back healthy coasts and oceans though CPR (Conservation, Permeability and Retention). CPR is a way for all of us to design and maintain our gardens so that we can reduce urban runoff and the pollutants that go with it.

We are currently looking to test out this program, which is the most recent of the Surfrider Foundation programs. The Seattle Chapter believe it's a perfect fit for our communities, for more infomation go to our Ocean Friendly Gardens page.

If you are interested in heading up this program, please contact us at seattle@surfrider.org.

RESPECT THE BEACH PROGRAM -

Respect the Beach (RTB) is an award-winning coastal educational program that includes field trips, classroom lectures, handouts, video, and hands-on projects designed to explain coastal watershed processes, shoreline ecology and coastal areas stewardship to K-12 students and community groups.

For more infomation go to our Respect the Beach Program page.

The Seattle Chapter's Respect the Beach Program is currently in need of a coordinator. If you have any interest in this program, please contact us. Seattle@surfrider.org.

For More Information on Beach Health, go to the Surfrider Foundation's State of the Beach Report.
